Wølffe is the stage name of a 23 year old London-based singer-songwriter on the way up. Having been taken on by Rocket Management (founded by Elton John) last year, she has been working with different producers, recently releasing her debut original single, « Shoot You Down », with a video filmed in New York. A London Grammar-esque banger with super smooth trip-hoppy production that shows off her sultry voice, the kind of voice that carries a lot of soul, of which you might end up hearing a lot more in the near future.
Preceding this first original release, Wølffe covered Drake’s hit « Hold on, We’re Going Home ». With a chord-strong piano intro, she comes in the same time as the downtempo percussion before the recognisable chorus lyrics ease you into commercial comfort zone. Although having someone else’s voice singing them is an interesting way to make your mark, especially as your debut single.
Wølffe also collaborates with other producers. Another recent release on which she has featured has been a single called « Falling » by the GIANTS. Similar to the Drake cover, it starts off with a chord-driven piano intro and sultry yearn, before a catchy more upbeat chorus sways the tide, however yearny the lyrics remain, « waiting for nothing again and again… » and so on. But pop has always liked a good heartfelt grovel. About your lost loves, and in this case, about your friends that let you down. Shoot you down, let you down: it gives the soul the will to sing.
