Let’s get the week off to a good start with Villagers‘ latest album…
The face behind the name is Irish Conor O’Brien, who released his third album Darling Arithmetic on April 13th, with his most frank and intimate songs to date.
His new opus is written in the first person, as he wanted to give his listeners a more raw experience. Conor composed, remixed, and produced the entire album solo, accompanied by piano, guitar and mellotron, which really enrich his vocals.
The track « Courage » defines the autobiographical side of the album; the line « It took a little time to be me » reveals to listeners how much Conor went through before he could be comfortable with his sexuality.
Let’s give it a listen: the video is minimalist but captivating.
The nine songs of the album take us through a whole world of emotion: bitterness, redemption, relief, and so much more. Conor’s peaceful vocals take us by the hand on a journey, and call to mind Alexandre Ebert of Edward and the Magnetic Zeros, or Damien Rice.
